WHAT TO PREPARE
Please prepare a one-minute vocal selection in a style appropriate to the production. Bring clearly marked sheet music in the correct key for the provided accompanist.
Additional vocal selections, readings, or movement may be requested during auditions or callbacks.
REHEARSALS
Rehearsals begin Sunday, July 19, 2026, and will generally be held Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Minimal conflicts may be accommodated, but availability for the majority of the rehearsal process is required. All performers must be available for all technical rehearsals and performances. A complete list of conflicts must be provided at auditions.

JEAN VALJEAN
Character age: 35–50
Vocal range: High lyric baritenor, G♯2–B4
A poor peasant who rises from imprisonment to a life of affluence and generosity. Valjean possesses great strength, nobility, compassion, and dignity.
JAVERT
Character age: 35–50
Vocal range: Baritone, F2–G4
An imposing police inspector who relentlessly pursues Valjean. Javert must possess natural gravitas with the ability to be expressive, commanding, and dynamic.
FANTINE
Character age: 20–30
Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano, F3–E♭5
A poor but beautiful factory worker struggling to support her young daughter. Although ultimately defeated by her circumstances, Fantine is strong, determined, and a survivor.
THÉNARDIER
Character age: 40–60
Vocal range: Baritone, C2–G4
A strong character role. A crooked innkeeper who later becomes a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, boorish, vulgar, and entirely out for himself.
MADAME THÉNARDIER
Character age: 30–50
Vocal range: Mezzo-belter, G♯3–D5
A tough, coarse, and vulgar woman determined to con her way out of poverty. She is a doting mother to Eponine but neglectful of her other children.
COSETTE
Character age: 18–25
Vocal range: Lyric soprano, B♭3–C6
Fantine’s daughter, raised by Valjean. Beautiful, elegant, compassionate, and vulnerable, with an understanding of the world’s darkness shaped by her difficult childhood.
EPONINE
Character age: 18–25
Vocal range: Mezzo-belter, F3–E5
The daughter of the Thénardiers, though she shares none of their cruelty or selfishness. Brave, resourceful, and emotionally open, she wears her heart on her sleeve.
ENJOLRAS
Character age: 20–30
Vocal range: High baritenor, A2–G4
A very strong singer. Handsome, charismatic, and commanding, Enjolras is the leader of the student revolutionary movement.
MARIUS
Character age: 18–25
Vocal range: High baritenor, A2–A♭4
A member of the revolutionary student movement. Raised in an affluent household but disowned because of his political convictions, Marius is attractive, romantic, sensitive, and idealistic.
GAVROCHE
Character age: 10–12; ideally under five feet tall
Vocal range: Unchanged voice, B3–G5
A young street urchin left to survive by his intelligence and wit on the streets of Paris. The son of the Thénardiers, he resents his parents and lives independently. We will cast two young actors to alternate nightly between the roles of Gavroche and Petit Gervais.
PETIT GERVAIS
Character age: 10–12; ideally under five feet tall
A young ragamuffin Valjean encounters on the road. This is a non-singing role. We will cast two young actors to alternate nightly between the roles of Gavroche and Petit Gervais.
THE BISHOP OF DIGNE
Character age: 60+
Vocal range: Baritone, A2–E4
A compassionate religious leader who sees beyond Valjean’s past and recognizes the great man he could become. In this production, the Bishop will not play additional roles but will appear throughout the story as a guiding presence for Valjean.
YOUNG COSETTE
Character age: 8–12; under five feet tall
Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano, A3–C5
Fantine’s daughter, who has endured hardship and child labor at the hands of the Thénardiers. Sympathetic, innocent, and resilient.
Two young actresses will be cast to alternate nightly between Young Cosette and Young Eponine.
YOUNG EPONINE
Character age: 8–12; under five feet tall
Non-singing and non-speaking role
The pampered and spoiled daughter of the Thénardiers who bullies Young Cosette.
Two young actresses will be cast to alternate nightly between Young Cosette and Young Eponine.
MEMBERS OF THE ABC SOCIETY
Courfeyrac, Combeferre, Feuilly, Joly, Grantaire, Lesgles, and Jean Prouvaire
Character ages: 16–30
Members of a secret society of students and workers who become leaders of the revolution under Enjolras. These performers will also portray a variety of additional roles throughout the production.
THÉNARDIER’S GANG
Montparnasse, Babet, Brujon, and Claquesous
Character ages: 30–60
Dangerous and threatening members of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. These performers will also portray additional characters throughout the production, including the Foreman, Bamatbois, and Fauchelevant.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE
Character ages: 18–55
Performers will portray a variety of roles throughout the production, including factory workers, women of the streets, a wigmaker, an innkeeper’s wife, nuns, wedding guests, and others.
Additional ensemble performers will portray the people of Montreuil-sur-Mer and Paris, students, workers, inn patrons, wedding guests, revolutionaries, and other featured roles throughout the production.

Character age: 60+
A sweet, charming, and deeply hospitable woman who lives in Brooklyn with her sister Martha. Abby is generous, proper, and beloved by the neighborhood, though her kindness conceals a hilariously unsettling secret.
MARTHA BREWSTER
Character age: 60+
Abby’s equally warm and well-mannered sister. Martha is gentle, gracious, and devoted to her family, with an innocent cheerfulness that makes the sisters’ shocking hobby all the more darkly comic.
MORTIMER BREWSTER
Character age: 30–45
A theatre critic and nephew to Abby and Martha. Intelligent, anxious, romantic, and increasingly frantic, Mortimer spends the play trying to manage his family’s chaos while keeping his own life from falling apart.
ELAINE HARPER
Character age: 20–35
Mortimer’s fiancée and the daughter of the local minister. Elaine is bright, spirited, charming, and more than capable of standing her ground as Mortimer’s family complications become harder to ignore.
TEDDY BREWSTER
Character age: 35–55
Mortimer’s brother, who believes he is President Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy is enthusiastic, endearing, and fully committed to his presidential duties, charging up the stairs as if taking San Juan Hill.
JONATHAN BREWSTER
Character age: 35–55
Mortimer’s sinister brother, recently returned home after years away. Threatening, intense, and dangerous, Jonathan brings a darker kind of trouble into the Brewster household.
DR. EINSTEIN
Character age: 40–65
Jonathan’s nervous accomplice and plastic surgeon. Dr. Einstein is reluctant, weary, and often caught between fear and self-preservation, bringing sharp comic tension to Jonathan’s menace.
REVEREND DR. HARPER
Character age: 50+
Elaine’s father and the minister who lives next door to the Brewsters. Respectable, kind, and dignified, Dr. Harper is fond of the Brewster sisters and protective of his daughter.
OFFICER BROPHY
Character age: 25+
A neighborhood police officer who is familiar with the Brewster household. Friendly, practical, and good-natured, Brophy helps establish the everyday world of the neighborhood.
OFFICER KLEIN
Character age: 25+
A police officer and colleague of Brophy. Klein is helpful, observant, and part of the comic rhythm of the police presence in the Brewster home.
OFFICER O’HARA
Character age: 25+
A police officer with dreams of becoming a playwright. Eager, talkative, and theatrical, O’Hara is especially excited to discover that Mortimer is a theatre critic.
LIEUTENANT ROONEY
Character age: 40+
A commanding police lieutenant. Rooney is authoritative, impatient, and determined to bring order to the confusion unfolding inside the Brewster home.
MR. GIBBS
Character age: 50+
A prospective roomer who visits the Brewster house. His brief encounter with Abby and Martha places him very close to the sisters’ dangerous hospitality.
MR. WITHERSPOON
Character age: 50+
The superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium. Professional, polite, and unsuspecting, Witherspoon becomes unexpectedly involved in the Brewster sisters’ plans.

Springfield Little Theatre’s Y.E.S. Troupe is the highest performing, most widely recognized teen musical theatre song & dance ensemble in the Ozarks.
Y.E.S. Troupe seeks and nurtures focused and spirited high school-aged musical theatre performers. Auditions are held annually, and the members of the group remain together for the entirety of the Springfield Little Theatre season. Membership offers participants a stimulating, fast-paced rehearsal environment; multiple performance opportunities; a sense of belonging; an investment in community; discounted class sessions at SLT; internship opportunities; and college/career guidance from a caring and creative staff. All troupers learn the values of accountability, discipline, teamwork, kindness, hard work, and play, attributes that will serve them in any of their future endeavors and are instilled with a lifelong love for the arts. For the serious student who aspires to pursue a career in theatre, Y.E.S. Troupe functions as a formal training ground, a springboard and a home base, as well as fosters a supportive alumni network.

AUDITIONS
- Wednesday, July 29, 2026 – Illumination Auditions – 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Please wear dance attire and bring jazz and tap shoes. You will be led through a dance audition in various styles.
AUDITION WORKSHOP
- Wednesday, July 22, 2026; 4:30 – 6:00 PM ($30)

The Audition Workshop is not mandatory. It is offered to help prepare interested students to present their best at auditions.
ILLUMINATION DANCE TROUPE COMMITMENTS
- Parent Meeting: Monday, August 3 – 5:30-7:00 p.m. (Attend with Y.E.S. Troupe from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and stay for additional info pertinent to IDCO only from 6:30-7:00 p.m.)
- Choreography Intensives: Monday, August 17 – 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; Wednesday, August 19, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
- Technique Class and Repertoire Rehearsals: Mondays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. HS/4:30-5:30 p.m. MS and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. HS/4:30-5:30 p.m. MS Wednesday, August 26 – Monday, May 24
- Tuition: High School Dancers – $200 a month; Middle School Dancers – $125 a month
